DIY Summer Tips (by Michelle Pino)

The urgency to get into the summer mood is in the air, but so too is the urgency to get swimsuit summer ready. Moms with kids know that time is of no luxury, but all is not lost. Simple mixtures that involve three ingredients or less in twenty minutes or less will smooth, soften, hydrate and resurface the skin and one method can temporarily get rid of cellulite. You read that right.

An excellent “do it yourself” scrub comes by way of raw sugar cane, almond oil and an essential oil of choice. This scrub is perfect for the shower as it can be messy, but is easy to wash off. It leaves the skin invigorated by the large granules of sugar and soft and vibrant from the almond oil. The scrub can be kept for weeks, but be careful to keep water out of it.

To temporarily rid of cellulite, rub on used coffee grounds prior to the scrub to the desired area. Say “hello” to toner, healthy and vibrant skin that’s ready for summer. Do not keep leftover coffee grounds.

Summer days can bring heat and a sense of malaise. Skin suffers too. To relieve redness and skin heat, create a toner from cucumbers. Cucumbers are known to relieve heat in the body. Its cooling and soothing properties relieve redness and heat while providing wonderful hydration to the skin. Crush cucumbers by any method—manually, by food processor or by juicer. To give skin extra replenishment, mix honey and plain yogurt together and wear as a mask. The yogurt works to soothe the skin, which can be applied after a sunburn as well, and the honey works to hydrate the skin. These two mixtures can be kept in the fridge for a couple of days.

To resurface skin and provide nourishment in a safe manner, apply Vitamin E to the skin at night before bed. Vitamin E is wonderful for ridding of scars—from stretch marks to acne scars. Simply take a Vitamin E capsule and poke a hole in it to extract the oil. Apply it to the desired area overnight and wake up to healthier looking skin. One capsule effectively covers the entire face. More may be needed depending upon the area to be covered.

An instant scrub that is similar to microdermabrasion involves the use of baking soda and strawberries. This scrub effectively smooths the skin while making it brighter. The baking soda granules are gritty enough to provide gentle exfoliation, but are small enough that it beautifully buffs the skin. The crushed strawberry works to brighten the skin and provides Vitamin C that the skin loves. This mixture can be kept for a day or two in the fridge.
